The women's hockey world championship tournament, set for May 6-16 in Nova Scotia, has been canceled because of continued coronavirus concerns.

The International Ice Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada said that the Nova Scotia government decided to cancel the tournament, which already had been moved from April to May.

Participating countries were scheduled to arrive on Thursday to begin their quarantines. Games were slated to be held in Halifax and Truro.

There is hope the tournament can be played later this year.

"In the end, we must accept the decision of the government," the IIHF and Hockey Canada said in a joint statement. "This does not mean that we will not have a Women's World Championship in 2021.

"We owe it to every single player that was looking forward to getting back on the ice after such a difficult year that we do everything possible to ensure this tournament can be moved to new dates and played this year."

The men's world championship is set for later next month in Latvia.

Premier Iain Rankin made the decision because of rising coronavirus cases.

Nova Scotia's chief medical officer Dr. Robert Strang on Tuesday had said he was comfortable with the protocols in place for the 10-country tournament to be played as scheduled.

"I sincerely regret the short notice, but the rapidly changing environment dictates this decision in the interest of the safety of Nova Scotians and participants," Rankin said in a statement.

The U.S. women will look to extend their streak of titles to six whenever the tournament is played.

U.S. coach Bob Corkum had already stepped down because of his COVID-19 protocol concerns.

"We respect the concern for the health and safety of everyone involved and share the heartbreak of our athletes and staff who put so much into preparing for the world championship," according to a USA Hockey statement. "We will remain optimistic for the tournament to be conducted this summer as the IIHF and Hockey Canada explore alternate dates and locations."

The pandemic caused cancellation of the 2020 women's championship in Nova Scotia.
