Midfielder Carles Gil, a key contributor during the New England Revolution's revival last season, will not play in Saturday's season opener because of a foot injury.
Gil, 27, scored 10 goals with 14 assists in 2019 as the Revolution rebounded from a 1-5-1 start to earn a spot in the playoffs after the team hired Bruce Arena to be its new coach in May. Gil has experience in both La Liga in Spain and the Premier League in England.
"Carles is doing well," Arena said, according to MLSsoccer.com. "He trained in our indoor facility and we expect him out on the (practice) field this week. I don't expect him to play in the first game."
The Revolution play Saturday at the Montreal Impact before playing their home opener March 7 against the Chicago Fire.
