The state chairman of the Democratic Party in Arkansas has been shot and killed.

A gunman walked into the office of Chairman Bill Gwatney, 48, pumping off shots before speeding off in his pickup.

Police later shot and killed the suspect, whose name has not been released, after a lengthy chase.

Bill Gwatney died four hours after being shot at University Hospital in Little Rock.

The gunman was admitted to the chairman’s office on the pretext of wanting to join the party.

Gwatney, a former state senator and a Hillary Rodham Clinton superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention this month in Denver, had served 10 years as a state senator.
