Lebanese government and Hezbollah reach agreement
Canada News.Net Tuesday 20th May, 2008
It is believed the Lebanese government and Hezbollah have reached a breakthrough after five days of talks in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
Under the mediation of the Arab League, the rival Lebanese leaders have reached an agreement early to end a political feud that nearly drove the country to a new civil war.
The Western-backed pro-government majority and the Hezbollah-led opposition were locked in talks to agree about the election of a new president and the formation of a government of national unity.
MP's, after the meeting, told reporters that an agreement had been reached and a parliamentary vote to elect a president would occur on Thursday or Friday.
Internal discord has left Lebanon without a president for six months now.
The political crisis came to a violent head two weeks ago with heavy fighting between supporters of both sides that left at least 65 people dead and more than 200 wounded.
